Caring more about our customers during COVID-19: an alliance-wide effort in numbers

Taking care of our customers has always been number-one priority for SkyTeam and its members, and over the last few months this has become more important than ever.
Date 22 June 2020

Every SkyTeam member has contributed to the global efforts to ease the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, as part of an alliance-wide collaboration to keep our customers – and the world – safe and secure.

Take a look at some of the actions members have taken to help out during this critical time.

To date, SkyTeam members have conducted 2,000+ repatriation flights, reuniting 700,000 people with their loved ones.

Aerolíneas Argentinas has operated 67 flights from cities around the world, bringing 20,000 Argentines back home. Alitalia has also repatriated 20,000 citizens and Aeroflot a remarkable 50,000 people.

The Air France-KLM Group has facilitated the repatriation of over half a million passengers. As part of these efforts, a KLM aircraft touched down in Australia for the first time in 20 years. The airline conducted six flights to Sydney, helping 2,000 Dutch nationals.

MEA has brought close to 19,000 people back to Lebanon, while China Airlines and Garuda Indonesia have carried out several repatriation flights from cities including Delhi, Shanghai, Tokyo and Wuhan.

SkyTeam members have supported the global supply chain, transporting tens of thousands of tons of essential goods around the world.

Members have been using the cabins of passenger aircraft to carry extra cargo to help them transport more goods. This enabled Czech Airlines to transport one million face masks from Shanghai to the Czech Republic and allowed a TAROM B737 to carry 350,000+ face masks to Romanian hospitals.

China Airlines have shifted 10,000+ tons, while Vietnam Airlines have transported 1,000+ tons of medical supplies, equivalent to 34.3 million face masks.

Air France and KLM have set up an air bridge with China to transport vital equipment into France and the Netherlands – operating seven flights and shifting 500 tons per week.

On the 25th April, Saudia Cargo set an industry record by lifting 65.3 tons in the belly of a B777 pax aircraft, operated as a freighter and carrying essential food supplies from Pakistan to Saudi Arabia.

Right at the start of the pandemic, Korean Air supplied 40,000 face masks to hospitals in stricken Wuhan.

Xiaman Air donated 10,000 masks to Korean Air and 20,000 to KLM.

China Eastern has delivered 6,000+ tons of medical supplies to over 20 countries including Croatia, the Czech Republic and Italy, using its fleet of wide-body aircraft.

Air France has donated inflight products to 20+ French hospitals, including 17,000+ comfort kits as well as sleeping masks and earplugs.

Air Europa has supplied 4,000 blankets, 2,000 amenity kits and 1,000 pillows to the Ifema field hospital in Madrid.

Delta has donated 90+ tons of food and staff were producing 5,000 face shields a day, and are also offering free flights to US medical personnel.

Xiaman Air has conducted 52 charter flights, transporting 6,000 doctors and nurses to affected cities in China and the Philippines.

Kenyan Airways has distributed 3,000+ litres of hand sanitizer to communities in Kenya, and their upholstery teams are producing up-cycled masks for 4,000+ staff and local residents.

This is just a snapshot of the actions taken by SkyTeam member airlines to help people and communities affected by COVID-19. We will continue to support each other and others around the world over the coming months as the world works to bring an end to the pandemic.

One day, we will all see each other again, on the ground, on the tarmac, and in the skies. Until that time, from everyone at SkyTeam:

Stay safe.  #StayConnected
