Project leader scoops prestigious award for efforts to take The Sustainable Flight Challenge to new heights

For the third consecutive year, SkyTeam is uniting airlines in its mission to discover new ideas that could have the potential to help reduce air travel’s environmental impact.

This year, SkyTeam’s newest member Virgin Atlantic is participating for the first time. And, in a first for the leisure travel market, non-affiliated airlines TUI Airline and Corendon Dutch Airlines will also take part as SkyTeam broadens the scope of the initiative.

The Sustainable Flight Challenge (TSFC) was launched by SkyTeam in 2022, becoming the first initiative of its kind by a global airline alliance.

TSFC hit the headlines last week when TSFC project leader, Robin Spierings, was named ‘Sustainability Champion’ at the prestigious Business Travel Sustainability Awards Europe 2024

The Business Travel Sustainability Awards were held in London on 14 May where Robin beat stiff competition from 16 entries and two other finalists to take the title.

Judges commended her for, “leading a large and important project requiring buy in from executives that has a significant impact in the industry when it comes to reducing CO2 emissions and embodying sustainability in her professional life. Her personal story is as powerful as her professional story.”

This year’s Challenge will include 23 different airlines and will run between now and the end of October 2024.

The ambition for TSFC 2024 is to demonstrate the potential of the 465 solutions generated in previous years, by scaling and implementing them more widely.
