SkyTeam insights and analytics: bringing you up to date with data around mishandled bags

Thanks to our new Dashboard collating and visualizing critical data and metrics from across our member airlines, it’s now easier than ever to identify and solve key interline customer pain points across the alliance.
Date 7 November 2019

SkyTeam served no less than 7.14 million flown interline transfer passengers between Jan-Sept 2019 – meaning the insights we’re gathering are of critical importance to help us ensure each customer enjoys the most seamless traveling experience possible.

This month, we’re taking a look at data around mishandled bags. Focusing on this metric in some key stations and connections could have a hugely positive impact for our members, and in turn customers, as it can help to reduce the volume of mishandled bags experienced during their travels.

This is because mishandled bags represent a significant cost for members, with an industry average bag-recovery cost of $100 USD. Approximately one in 25 flown interline transfer passengers experienced a mishandled bag along their journey in the period of Jan-Aug 2019, with a total of 289,709 bags being mishandled across our alliance.

The Year to Date alliance-wide interline mishandled bag rate per 1000 interline transfer passengers is 49. The following stations, which all support multiple members, have YTD rates in excess of the alliance average. Sheremetyevo International Airport (SVO) at 136 serving 13 members, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) at 127 serving 6 members, John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) at 64 serving 14 members, Paris-Charles De Gaulle (CDG) at 55 serving 17 members, and Heathrow Airport (LHR) at 54 serving 15 members.

This data only includes mishandled bags where the inbound and outbound carriers are different SkyTeam members.
