China Airlines picked by DJSI for Eighth Consecutive Year

The results of the 2023 Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) have been announced. For the eighth consecutive year, China Airlines, the Taiwan based carrier, has been selected as a constituent stock for Emerging Markets, receiving the second highest score in the global airline industry.

DJSI is the most authoritative index on corporate sustainability performance and is an important reference for global institutional investors. This year, 61 airlines from around the world took part in the evaluation. China Airlines scored full marks in the Waste, Water, Passenger Safety, Sustainable Marketing & Brand Perception, Business Ethics, and Transparency & Reporting categories, and received the highest score in the airline industry for the Biodiversity, Talent Attraction & Retention, Information Security, Cyber Security & System Availability, and Labor Practice Indicators categories. An outstanding performance in all ten categories demonstrated the airline’s success in integrating its business strategy with its sustainability philosophy.

No effort is spared by China Airlines when it comes to promoting ESG. The airline has taken part in the SkyTeam Alliance “The Sustainable Flight Challenge” for two years running. The Sustainability Demonstration Flight program was expanded this year, making China Airlines the first Taiwanese carrier to operate passenger and cargo-carrying flights on Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF). The 15-fold improvement in associated carbon reduction performance won accolades for “Best Inflight Supply Chain” and “Best Adopted Solution”. The spirit of the sustainability demonstration flights was also expanded by China Airlines to cover routine operations. In-flight sorting of waste for recycling was trialed and is now being progressively rolled out to all long-haul routes. Aluminum cans, glass bottles, PET bottles and paper waste produced from in-flight services are now sorted, sealed in eco-friendly trash bags, and placed in the ECO CART to further reduce the burden on the planet through eco-friendly practices.

Last year, the airline surpassed itself by winning its first-ever “The Most Prestigious Sustainability Award – Top Ten Domestic Companies Award” and was ranked as the top-performing airline in the world by the S&P Global Sustainability Yearbook.
