SkyTeam’s Sustainable Flight Challenge Takes Off
SkyTeam’s Members Working Together to Maximize SustainabilityAs airlines we connect people, taking them to places that expand their horizons.
We now have an opportunity to keep the world connected – without contributing to climate change.
SkyTeam and its members already collaborate on measures that make flights across our network some of the safest and most seamless in the industry. The Sustainable Flight Challenge gives us the opportunity to now collaborate on sustainability so that together we accelerate innovation and set air travel on a path to net-zero emissions by 2050.
Kristin Colvile said: “As guests in the sky, it is our duty to leave a better planet behind when we depart.
“Our members already have a wealth of sustainability initiatives to help them reduce their environmental impact, from investment in sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), to fleet efficiency, weight reduction and waste management.
“The Sustainable Flight Challenge enables us to build on these positive initiatives by uniting out efforts so that we collectively drive changes we would not be able to achieve on our own.”
From May 1 – 14, 2022, each participant will operate a medium-haul or long-haul flight on a route that is part of their existing network.
The aim is to maximize the sustainability of the flight at every step, from check-in to baggage claim. Measurements will be evaluated by comparing the flight challenge to the operating carrier’s baseline.
The scope includes belly cargo and airlines can choose to offset any remaining CO2 emissions to make their flight challenge carbon neutral.
And by sharing best practice after the event, together we will create an ecosystem where knowledge and innovation is freely exchanged, levelling the playing field amongst our industry partners.
The idea behind the Sustainable Flight Challenge was initially developed by KLM before being picked up by SkyTeam.
And with every employee having the potential to come up with innovative ideas, this really is a chance for everyone to make a difference.
The challenge is open to all SkyTeam members and invited affiliate airlines.
