Future female leaders from across our alliance are taking flight with RISE

What would make under-represented STEM careers in the aviation industry more attractive to women?

This is the question that future female leaders from across our alliance are investigating as part of an exciting capstone project.

A capstone project is one that allows students or learners to come up with an innovative solution to a real-world problem, through independent research and exploration.

Participants in SkyTeam’s RISE program are now exploring different ideas for how to attract more women into STEM careers in our industry.

Launched in April, RISE is a year-long leadership program aimed at women across the alliance who have been identified as high-potential future leaders.

Participants have already completed the first block of the program, which was entitled ‘Authentic Power.’ They are now turning their attention to the second block of the program, which is dedicated to a self-paced, personal branding program in addition to the capstone project.

Sawsan Kayssi, Middle East Airlines: “RISE gave me the opportunity first to get to know and work with wonderful ladies from all over the world with whom we shared our experience in the airline industry. I learned more about myself and how to face any challenge in order to move my career further. The diversity and richness of the women I have met within the RISE group, increased more and more my self-confidence.”

Tina Iglio, Delta Air Lines: “The best part of the program, so far, has been developing relationships with so many intelligent and talented women across broad areas of expertise across SkyTeam’s member airlines. It will help us share best practices across our airlines, resulting in a stronger SkyTeam alliance. I have already connected one participant who is trying to determine how to build a business case for sustainable onboard products with our supply chain team that has recently done this.

The program has been thoughtfully put together and combines a great balance between online learning and self-paced learning, and I am looking forward to meeting everyone in person!”

Jill Chung, Korean AirRISE inspired me to understand what my authentic power is and to remain strong and confident as who I am. Sharing thoughts with exceptional women further enriched my experience with the program.”

Jenny Tsao, China AirlinesThe RISE program set a platform for women leaders to self-explore through the guidance of professionals to transform ourselves by learning our inner saboteurs and how to strengthen our SAGE powers. Through the breakout sessions during online courses, we share our strengths and weakness in professional life with each other and knowing we share mutual feelings is very comforting and encouraging,

In the upcoming ‘Branded U’ sessions, we are going to explore more with female leaders beyond the airline industry, which is very much anticipated to create more sparkles together. Hopefully, by the end of this program, we can all create a new empowering story that is unique and helpful to the female workers in the airline industry.

Estelle Leray, Air Europa: “You can’t fix what you don’t see” it is a quote I read during my research inside RISE program, and suddenly I realize that in the industry we are not talking much about the fact that women are poorly represented. Most of the people think that it is a lack of interest from my gender but it is not – it is a lack of information, of sponsorship, of family/work balance, commitment from the management, etc. The program helped me to share concerns, to build a network and hopefully will make the issue more visible as it is crucial to have a better male/female representation in the airline industry.”
